Special Economic Zone: Chiangrai-City of border commerce, investment, and tourism connecting the Mekong region
As part of the Thai government’s strategic plan to develop special areas that will support the economic development of the country, improve competitiveness, facilitate commerce and investment, improve the quality of life of the Thai people, and ultimately to strengthen the country as a whole, it has designated ten provinces to be Special Economic Development Zones (SEZ). Each of the special SEZ areas have clear infrastructure development plans which include transport, utility and custom services. The SEZ policy was first launched in 2015 based on the government's belief in the strong potential of the 10 areas to connect with the neighboring countries in ASEAN in terms of trade, economy and investment.
Chiangrai is one the of provinces that was designated in 2016 as a special economic zone to be developed in Phase 2 of the government’s strategic plan. Chiangrai is prominently placed for investment as it produces an abundance of agricultural products, has adequate and suitable infrastructure and utilities, financial institutions, educational institutions, skilled labor development centers, and hospitals. It is also a province that has a unique cultural heritage that makes it one of the popular tourist destinations. In short, Chiangrai is perfect for potential investment.
In addition to being suitable for investment, Chiangrai’s geographical location makes it a perfect location for conducting business as it is conveniently accessible by land, air and sea. Its proximity to Myanmar, Laos and the area of Southern China makes it an excellent portal for commerce, investment and tourism for the Mekong Region. Myanmar and Laos can be accessed via six border entrances around Chiangrai.
Access to Chiangrai:
By land: Chiangrai connects trade from the north and south via routes R3A and R3B. It also connects to other districts such as Chiangkong, Bokaew and Luang Namta, and also to China.
By sea: sea and water transport routes also connect Chiangrai to other destinations. The Mekong River joins the province to local areas such as Chiangrung and Sibsongphanna and to international cities such as Hanoi and Saba.
By air: Chiangrai is accessible from international destinations via the Mae Fah Luang International Airport which handles over 40 flights per day.
Chiangrai is also part of an international regional cooperative called the Great Mekong Subregion which has been active for over 20 years with cooperation among Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Hunan (China). The Special Economic Zone of Chiangrai is comprised of the following areas:
Mai Sai District is comprised of a total area of 304.78 square kilometers and has eight sub-districts. It is particularly noted for its border trade. Strategic plans for this area are to promote it as a hub for transport and logistics. In addition, this includes it becoming a Thai-Myanmar border area market and also serving as a tourism path to Mandalay in Myanmar.
Chiangkhong is comprised of a total area of 783.20 square kilometres and has seven sub-districts. Plans for this area include it becoming a city for historical heritage with special emphasis on cultural activities. It is also planned to be a commercial and logistics hub for agricultural products due to its proximity to the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge. Chiangkohng is to be promoted as a city for good quality of life with notable cultural and environmental advantages.
Chiangsaen is comprised of a total area of 456.86 square kilometres and has six sub-districts. The Chiangsaen port serves to increase trade and tourism with the southern part of China, which is only 300 kilometers away. As Chiangsaen is known for its agricultural products and tourism, plans for it are to become a ‘Compact City’ with a populated city center, complete with infrastructure and modern conveniences. The intent is to establish Chiangsaen as unique landmark of the area and this will include improving accessibility and transportation. Promotion of tourism will emphasize activities around the river area and the preservation of local culture and communities. Environmentally friendly development is the focus here as preservation of the local landscape and greenery while promoting tourism will be the main goal.
World’s 8th Tallest Monumental Flagpole: Putting Chiangsaen on the World Map
In order to help establish Chiangsaen as one of the world’s iconic landmarks, there are plans to erect a custom designed monumental flag pole on the highest point in the Trin Nakara Golden Triangle Project. It will be the world’s 8th tallest free-standing flagpole with a height of 189 meters which is comparable to a 63-storey building. It will proudly fly a Thai flag with a dimension of 60x40 meters, which is equivalent to a football field and will be visible from over 20 kilometers distance.
Trident Support LLC of the United States, experts in flagpole construction, utilizing modern engineering, fabrication and erection technology to build flagpoles that have set a number of world records around the globe, will construct this monumental flagpole for the project. The flag will be made of material developed by Trident Support LLC which has been fabricated for strength and will withstand wind and heat. It will be produced by stitching together smaller pieces to create a large flag that will be vibrant and sturdy and long lasting, suitable to be considered as a landmark monument.

Thousands of Chiang Saen people participated in respectful cultural events, Upagupta Buddha parade, and Peng Put. Wiang Chiangsaen Municipality in cooperations with Maha-ud Fund, Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Phra-tad Pangao, Chiang Saen communities, schools, all private sectors, and TRIN NAKARA GOLDEN TRIANGLE organised the legendary beautiful "Upagupta" Buddha parade from Mae Khong Pier through Chiang Saen town centre to Wat Chedi Luang for making merit by offering food to monks at “midnight”, called "Peng Put" on October 23rd.
Making merit by offering food to monk at midnight has been long tradition of the northern, Lanna for over four centuries. It was assumed that it was influenced from the Myanmar and Thai Lue. They belief that Upagupta would arrive on earth on full-moon Wednesday night. Also as their belief, making merit by offering food to Upagupta will bring prosper, and luck. On the same night for ceremony, monks would chant holy stanza in monastery before walking out to receive food from people.
According to Lanna,they belief that Upagupta is still alive. These ceremonies were to continue the beauty of Lanna's cultural heritage.
Wat Phra That Phangao invites Buddhists to participate in “2018 Hiran-Nakorn-Ngern-Yang (ancient name of Chiang Saen)...Lent Phansa Candles Ceremony” at 1.00 pm. on Saturday 28th of July at Wat Phra That Phangao, Chiang Saen District, Chiang Rai province. The Lent Phansa Candles will give to 10 temples in Chiang Saen District. The parade will be greatly arranged in traditional ancient Chiang Saen’s period. The participating Buddhists can together make merit not only for all, but also for His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun on his 66th Birthday in this Rains-Entry Day.
